Tchau Lisboa!

Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.

Tchau Lisboa!
Obrigada!
(Good-bye Lisbon! Thank-you!)

Two days of learning and fun have been added to my Lisbon adventure. An expedition to Alfama on the trolley. What a ride! Hang on!
Barrio Alto and a Fado performance. Wonderful, soulful soloists accompanied by a guitar player and mandolin player. Oh and very good Portuguese green wine-but it is white.

A monastery and the famous Belem pastries was an excellent way to begin my last day in Lisbon. Arriving by bus (if you are keeping track that is plane, metro, trolley, bus so far) the weather was ideal and these attractions were on the Tagus River. Very picturesque. Then a tram back to city center. A bit off course so I hailed a cab back to Rato the neighborhood I am staying in. (Please add tram and taxi if you are keeping track.)
Just a few comments about some of the photos; During the two days I happened upon a huge book fair and also a fair centered around people with challenges and services available. Ironic that I was able to experience two events so closely related to my profession! Elementary school children wear very different looking uniforms. Buttons in the back with a big round pocket on the front. One photo is of children being picked up from a school. Another photo is of a little boy pointing to the type of ice cream he would like his father to buy. I observed this a lot. Just imagine the joy in pointing to a photo of a delicious treat! Many parents and grandparents enjoyed ice cream after school as they helped their children with homework. One of the parks became a favorite of mine. At the concession (beer and wine included) the young ladies taught me some Portuguese words. You will see a photo of them at their stand. They loved that I wanted their photo and blew me a kiss good-bye. Tchau!

Love affair with Lisbon begins...

May 28, 2014 was exhausting yet exhilarating. After arriving from Newark at 6 a.m. I had a long wait in the passport line with a few hundred of my traveling buddies. Then believe it or not I faced and conquered one of my ultimate travel fears. I proceeded to find the metro, buy a pass and follow my hostess' email directions. All this while heaving a suitcase/backpack over my shoulder. Pretty darn proud to that accomplishment!

The rest of the day was spent exploring several neighborhoods close to my b&b. I needed to walk so I would not fall asleep.

I will be sharing a lot of photos. I hope it does not get to be too many. My blog will also be a journal of my trip so I am including a lot of photos.
*research mission should you choose to accept it; what is Fado? ....stay tuned...
Thank you for allowing me to share my travel journey with you. Traveling alone has advantages but one distinct disadvantage is not having anyone to share the adventures.

Lisbon I love you!

I will write more details later but wanted to share a photo from my b&b in Lisbon!

Mom and Dad

A few more days and I will start my adventure. Everyone travels for different reasons, varied motivations and certainly unique objectives. I am sharing a photo of my parents. They traveled extensively. This photo is from their vacation in Hawaii. It was the last state they visited in their quest to explore the United States. Just think traveling to all 50 states. They also traveled to Canada, Mexico and Europe.
Thanks mom and dad for teaching us that travel was an educational adventure. We learned a lot and especially realized that travel was fun! Yes, Marion and Jim definitely ignited the travel bug in our family!

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” Mark Twain
