The neighboorhood inherited this name in the 13th century when Jewish residents were forced to settle in one area. Later known as Prague Jewish Ghetto.
Old-New Synagogue: The oldest preserved synagogue in Central Europe
Franz Kafka is considered one of the most influential authors of the 20th century. He grew up in this neighborhood.
This statue is a memorial to Franz Kafka. It is installed in a square close to one of the homes he occupied. The sculptor is Jaroslav Rona. Here is a link if you would like to read more about Kafka.

The sidewalks, streets and paths are hard to walk on in Prague. The cobblestone is uneven and harsh. Often you find yourself looking down to either see what you have stumbled on or to prevent yourself from stumbling. These markers were embedded in the sidewalk directly outside the apartment I was staying in. Take a close look at the names and dates. Thanks to my friend, Pat, who did some extensive research for this post.

As we all know each area of the world has a horrid past of inhumanity. Unfortunately the injustices against people continue - my hope is that we could learn from our past and create a better future.

I agree with you. I wish all the world would disarm and mothers would rule. All the immense human suffering and loss caused by hatred and power grabs is so tragic.
