Europe - Part Two Genealogy Journey 2025

Our journey continues. We left Conwy, Wales and drove to Liverpool, England. OK-perhaps Great Britain…UK…still learning.

This is a bit of a side trip from our Genealogy Journey. Why Liverpool? As many of you know Bob is a Rock and Roll fan! And according to him the roots of Rock and Roll are the Beatles! End of story! So how fitting that we decided to trace the origins of this music to Liverpool! What a fun city! We started with a guided tour of all things Beatles in the morning and ended with Rock and Roll at the Cavern!

As you can see the Cavern was packed. A very lively and fun loving crowd! We asked a couple if we could share their table. Immediately they made room for us. We introduced ourselves and they were from Wales! Her name is Carwen and he is Nigel. When they learned Bob had Welsh ancestry they were delighted! They insisted on buying us a drink. What a fun memory at the Cavern.

York

Our next stop was York, England.
High Tea reservation during this stay in addition to a lot of history lessons.

Bob wanted to try
                                                                       Yorkshire Pudding.

Sometimes a brisk, cold wind calls for desperate measures!

York was another stop on Bob’s ancestry journey!

Thirsk was a doubleheader for us.
A visit to the James Herriot Museum and another ancestry stop for Bob.
All British Baking Show fans will appreciate this plaque I spotted in a local cafe.

VE Day decorations in Thirsk.

I am a fan of the BBC show, “All Creatures Great and Small”. It was a real treat exploring the home of this humble veterinarian and talented author.

Our next stop was a delight because we met two “church ladies” who were very charming!.  They are pictured below. We will remember them fondly.

Haddington, Scotland was an ancestry stop for Bob

The sweet “church ladies” of St. Mary’s Church. I bought a pair of hand knitted socks that were knitted by the lady on the right.
We discovered that the people of Wales, Scotland and England are quick to smile and even more likely to laugh! Good humor and warm personalities greeted us everywhere!

This was an occasion for a happy dance! Let’s ditch this car in Edinburgh!

Edinburgh Castle

As we were driving through the countryside we saw so many beautiful landscapes with sheep grazing. It was impossible to stop for a photo so this shot will be my remembrance of those cute creatures!

A true disciple of Rick Steves!
We found this theme repeated throughout all the museums in the UK. Very thought provoking.

Our Edinburgh hosts were Mark and Doug. Their cat, Trevor, was such a character! Their home was beautiful and they shared so many local recommendations with us. It truly made our stay memorable.

Mark is a representative for a small batch whisky distillery.

Trevor joined me for a few minutes while we were relaxing in the living room.

A historic Georgian House.

This piece by Dali was absolutely incredible!

This portrait depicts a scene from 1865. Bob’s ancestors lived in this area during this time.

If you look closely you can see the organist.

This is considered the soft drink of Scotland. I had to try it. It reminded me or orange jello.

A visit to Glasgow University

Glasgow Botanical Gardens

A Beatles tribute concert in Glasgow.

Our last night in Glasgow we met Angus. He was our waiter but we learned he is a musician. Such a nice young man. He was thrilled that we were continuing our adventures and wished us well!

For now we will say goodbye to the UK, Britain, Wales, Scotland so many beautiful places and gracious people! Our journey now takes us to Germany. Let’s learn about the Schmatz’s and Dhein’s ancestral homes!
