Remembrance

Neue Wache  "The New Guardhouse"
Central memorial site dedicated to victims of war and tyranny.

Mother and her Dead Son by Kathe Kollwitz

Originally created by Kathe Kollwitz in 1937 it was enlarged for this memorial and was installed in 1993.  The unique detail of the exhibit is the opening in the roof. The sculpture exposes our emotions as we walk into the monument. Mother and son are exposed to snow, rain and sun. Each day provides a view like no other. Nothing can explain the raw emotion that this display evokes.

In an effort to provide more detail of the sculpture I am posting the photo below taken from a museum website.

  1. So interesting that you sent photos of these sculptures. Last night on Brian Williams' coverage of D-Day one of the survivors who spoke of all the servicemen that died--said in their final moments you could hear them all crying out to their mothers! Totally heart-wrenching.
