Continuing my exploration of Berlin. I have met the challenge of public transit but have not mastered the recycle machine at the local market. You will understand when you view my photos and read my comments. Enjoy a few days of Berlin touring with me. Ready? Get your Bahn ticket and let's go!
Biking is a major mode of transportation. Designated paths on the streets and also on the sidewalks. While crossing streets watch for cars but be sure to watch for bikes too. Train stations have covered bike parking for commuters. The photo above is a bike rental station.
World Cup excitement is everywhere. All games are shown in every restaurant - even the fancier places. There are also public viewing parties like the ones pictured below.
Trains to Life Trains to Death - a monument outside a major transit center.
Memorials to victims of Berlin's torrid history are throughout the city.
One day I decided to take a detour from my usual route and came across this memorial. I believe it is for the protestors who were killed in Ukraine.
Dog lovers are everywhere and dogs are generally well behaved and welcomed everywhere. Many times I see them off leash but they stay close to their owner. I miss my Goldee so much so even looking and talking about pets is difficult. I am surprised at the number of dogs traveling on public transit. They must get them accustomed to the noise and crowds from when they are puppies.
Do you have energy left for more touring? Come on......more to see!
The VW Van photo is for my son and brothers. There is a bit of an obsession with these vechicles. Not sure if this is the exact one they discuss.....but it is a VW Van.
Oh yes, the challenge of the recycle machine I mentioned. When one knows how to do it you should be able to insert your glass, plastic and aluminum containers and get cash or credit for groceries. Well, when I tried it the darn thing kept spitting them back out! There are recycling cans at the apartment building but I had to try it. I will let you know if I ever get it right!
Also at the grocery store. I guess some shoppers like to choose their own eggs!
My dad and my son always had fun with this word...pumpernickel. Had to take a photo!
The Museum of Modern Art is just down the street from the apartment. On Saturdays and Sundays they include a free tour with admission. Hope you enjoy the photos from my visit.

Botanical Gardens and Tiergarten - two beautiful green spaces in Berlin.
No wonder I get confused sometimes. Don't worry I will get us back to the Bahn and to Tiergarten.
Berliners are known to like to sunbathe nude (I was told especially West Berliners.) Tiergarten is one location they favor but everyone seemed clothed the day I was there.
Curry wurst is a very popular food here. It is everywhere. This is a curry wurst stand near the Tiergarten. I understand it is a grilled sausage served with curry infused ketchup and usually served with fries.
I hope you enjoyed a few days of Berlin sightseeing. Rest up because next we will travel about one hour by train for some exploring. Here are some hints about our next journey in case you want to do a little research;
It is in another country but was part of Germany until 1945.
Previously referred to as Dammuorstadt.
Established in the 12th century.
The film Distant Lights (http://www.thefilmjournal.com/issue10/distantlights.html) was filmed in this city.
Rest and relax be ready for a new adventure soon!

ReplyDeleteTranslating the street sign you were at Hydrangea Place!
ReplyDeleteEvery place looks so clean. It's easy to see why the Germans were nicknamed the Scrubby Dutch.
ReplyDeleteI love how you capture the ordinary and the extraordinary in your photos, both function and design.
Your pictures are so beautiful and really capture the lifestyle of the locals. Just beautiful!
